SUMMARY:Book launch: Transmedia Geographies
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Edinburgh Futures Institute\, the Media and CommunicationsCluster of the University of Edinburgh\, and Lighthouse Books\, you are welcome to attend the launch of Transmedia Geographies: Decoloniality\, Democratization\, Cultural Citizenship\, and Media Convergence by Kevin Glynn and Julie Cupples\, Rutgers University Press. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nLooking at the US\, New Zealand\, and Central America\, this book considers how cultural politics has been deeply reworked in our contemporary media environment. The authors analyze how rampant technological convergence has allowed stories to spill across media platforms as well as geographical borders and how those stories reemerge as transmediated events. The authors explore the cultural politics that have developed within this new media environment by moving across the mediated landscapes of the first\, third\, and fourth (Indigenous people’s) worlds\, which are deeply intertwined and interconnected under contemporary conditions of neoliberal globalization and emergent regimes of authoritarian postdemocracy. The book attends both to the platforms and digital networks ofthe new media environment and to the cultural forms and practices that have constituted television as the dominant medium of communication throughout the second half of the twentieth century. In the new media environment\, transmediation works on behalf not only of those corporate megaconglomerates that have become all too familiar to media consumers around the world but also of many communities that have previously been excluded from access to the means of electronic textual production and circulation. For the latter\, grassroots transmediation has become an important technique for the production of cultural citizenship.

SUMMARY:Utopia Lab: The Understorey 
DESCRIPTION:Utopia is a ‘no-space’ for contemplation\, innovation and collaboration. The term utopia was coined from Greek by Sir Thomas More for his 1516 book Utopia\, describing a fictional island society in the Atlantic Ocean. The word comes from Greek: οὐ (“not”) and τόπος (“place”) and means “no-place” and strictly describes any non-existent society ‘described in considerable detail’.  \n\n\n\nOur Utopia Labs are ‘no-spaces’\, places where everyone is welcome to join us in dreaming futures that inspire our experience of the present. Our labs curate interactions between academics\, artists\, entrepreneurs\, students and audiences in person and online globally. We are interested in that which is provocative and irreverent as well as that which is nurturing and joyful. Utopia questions are catalysts for inquiry\, learning and creativity. With an emphasis on innovative and experimental ways of communicating\, we will explore meditation\, dialogue and co-creation with the help of a facilitator. Participants consist of University of Edinburgh staff and students\, and non-University practitioners.  \n\n\n\nIn this Utopia Lab session\, artist and writer Anna Chapman Parker will present her understanding of Utopia\, looking at how creative practices can respond to feelings of uncertainty\, disconnection and powerlessness. We will explore a variety of drawing and reading-drawing activities through which to engage with the everyday wildness of common local plants\, or ‘weeds’. We will consider what Utopia means and how it could be a useful crucible in which to explore positive change. \n\n\n\n\n10am-11am:   Welcome\, Warm Up and Introductions \n\n\n\n11am-12:30pm: Walking – Seeing – Drawing\n\n\n\n12:30pm-1:30pm:   Lunch \n\n\n\n1:30pm-3:30pm: Reading – Drawing – Sharing\n\n\n\n3:30pm-4pm:   Integration \n\n\n\n\nLunch and materials for creating will be provided. The lab will also include meditation\, poetry reading/listening and simple movement and breathing exercises. All body types and levels of experience welcome. Please wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to go for a walk outdoors\, in whatever the weather.  \n\n\n\nBiographies\n\n\n\n\n\nAnna Chapman Parker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Anna Chapman Parker is an artist and writer based in Northumberland. Her work explores relationships between drawing\, writing\, body and place. She is particularly interested in acts of focused observation; in how we record and report periods of looking within the increasingly mediated culture of the attention economy. She uses a variety of materials and methods from ink drawing to digital media\, often navigating uncertain relationships between drawing and text.  \n\n\n\nRecent exhibitions include Sonikebana\, commissioned by Edinburgh College of Art for Edinburgh Art Festival; Imprints: Art Edits Modernism at Shandy Hall\, Yorkshire; and I sat till I could see no longer at Fife Contemporary Arts\, St Andrews. My writing has appeared in Happy Hypocrite\, MAP and Rake’s Progress.   \n\n\n\nUnderstorey\, her first book\, was published by Duckworth Books in June 2024\, and was featured or reviewed in The Observer\, The Scotsman and the Daily Mail.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJennifer Williams\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJennifer Williams is the Creative Projects Manager at Edinburgh Futures Institute. She manages a portfolio of creative projects that connect the work of the Institute to communities within the University of Edinburgh and beyond its walls. Utopia Lab\, for instance\, is a project in which people from many different places gather to dream futures that inspire our experience of the present and allow us to see the world in new ways that enable change.  \n\n\n\nJennifer is a poet and librettist and her background is in writing\, art\, collaboration\, creative learning and project management. Williams is particularly interested in expanding dialogues across languages\, perspectives and cultures and in poetry\, cross-form work\, music\, visual art\, dance\, opera and theatre. She is concerned with the body\, and how slowing down can help busy people to experience their connection to themselves\, one another and the world more fully.  \n\n\n\nShe holds a BA degree from Wellesley College in English Literature with a Studio Art minor\, and an MLitt in Creative Writing from the University of Glasgow. He is excited about philosophical\, processual and political implications of utopian thinking\, but actually enjoys the off-grid\, poetry-infused meditative vibe of our labs the most. Matjaz is also an academic in Engineering Management\, where he is researching innovation processes\, R&D (eco)systems and futures strategies and design\, especially within the space industry\, artificial intelligence and data-driven economy. He leads interdisciplinary projects spanning arts\, science and civil society\, he is involved in several start-up companies; and he delivers an extensive public engagement programme. In his new book Nature’s Genuis: Evolution’s Lessons for a Changing World\, Professor David Farrier takes us on a profound journey into this ever-changing natural world\, encouraging us to think creatively about finding ways that we can adapt\, ways to stop the destruction we’re causing to the planet.  \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Farrier\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Farrier is Professor of Literature and the Environment at the University of Edinburgh. David’s first book\, Footprints: In Search of Future Fossils\, looked at the marks we are leaving on the planet and how these might appear in the fossil record in the deep future. It was named by both The Times and Telegraph as a Book of the Year\, earned praise from Robert Macfarlane and Margaret Atwood\, and has been translated into ten languages. He has had pieces published in The Atlantic\, BBC Future\, Emergence\, Prospect\, Daily Telegraph\, Orion and The Washington Post. He has spoken at numerous online events\, has given an invited lecture at the Royal Geographical Society\, and has appeared on radio and podcasts such as BBC’s Free Thinking and Little Atoms.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChair: Hermione Cockburn\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHermione Cockburn is an Honorary Fellow of the School of Geosciences at the University of Edinburgh and former Scientific Director at Dynamic Earth. She began her career in research working on landscape evolution in Africa\, Antarctica and Australia before moving on to present science programmes for the BBC including an 8-part television series about British palaeontology for which she wrote an accompanying book. She is passionate about empowering people with understanding and empathy for the Earth and enabling life-long learning. She was an associate lecturer with the Open University in Scotland teaching environmental science for many years and now works with a variety of organisations to support learning for a range of audiences. Hermione is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh\, a trustee of National Museums Scotland and in 2020 was awarded an OBE for services to public engagement in science.

SUMMARY:The New Real Salon: Doing AI Differently 
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the third iteration of The New Real Salon\, which introduces their new international initiative\, Doing AI Differently. This initiative sets out to integrate the humanities\, data science\, and engineering in shaping the future of artificial intelligence. It is led by The New Real and the Data-Centric Engineering at Alan Turing Institute; and brings together the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC/UKRI) and partner institutions in the UK and North America.  \n\n\n\nAI has transitioned from numerical outputs to text-based\, qualitative ones\, highlighting the need for the humanities\, arts and social sciences to guide its development. Doing AI Differently brings humanities insights directly into AI design\, fostering collaboration between disciplines and aims to address complex\, context-dependent tasks in AI. By doing so\, it enhances AI tools for deep contextual analysis across different domains\, and fundamentality advances data-centric engineering.  \n\n\n\nThis event will showcase insights from our research in exploring humanities-based approaches to AI design. The book journeys alongside the migrant workers\, technologists\, and entrepreneurs who shape and survive the dreams of a “Startup India” knitted through office work\, at networking meetings and urban festivals\, and across sites of leisure in the city. Tracking techno-futures that involve automation and impending precarity\, Hemangini Gupta details the everyday forms of experimentation\, care\, and friendship that sustain and reproduce life and labor in India’s current economy. \n\n\n\nA reception will follow the event.

SUMMARY:Marcus du Sautoy: How Mathematics Shapes Creativity
DESCRIPTION:Many of the artists that we encounter are completely unaware of the mathematics that bubble beneath their craft\, while some consciously use it for inspiration. Our instincts might tell us that these two subjects are incompatible forces with nothing in common – mathematics being the realm of precise logic and art being the realm of emotion and aesthetics – but what if we’re wrong?  \n\n\n\nMarcus du Sautoy joins us at the Futures Institute to unpack how we make art\, why a creative mindset is vital for discovering new mathematics\, and how a fundamental connection to the natural world intrinsically links these two subjects.  \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies\n\n\n\n\n\nMarcus du Sautoy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarcus du Sautoy has been named by the Independent on Sunday as one of the UK’s leading scientists\, has written extensively for the Guardian\, The Times and the Daily Telegraph and has appeared on Radio 4 on numerous occasions. In 2008 he was appointed to Oxford University’s prestigious professorship as the Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science\, a post previously held by Richard Dawkins.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChair: Minhyong Kim\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMinhyong Kim is Director and Sir Edmund Whittaker Professor of Mathematical Sciences at the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences in Edinburgh. He works on arithmetic geometry\, the study of spaces built out of finitely-generated systems of numbers\, employing ideas of mathematical physics\, especially topological quantum field theory.  Minhyong is a keen communicator of mathematics and has published 13 books in Korea for the general public. His latest project is a series of illustrated children’s books featuring a mathematician (who quickly disappears)\, his family (who search for him)\, and Schroedinger’s cat (who does both).

SUMMARY:The Power of Purpose: workshop series
DESCRIPTION:Led by Take Note and produced in collaboration with The Binks Hub and The Centre for Research on Families and Relationships (CRFR)\, The Power of Purpose workshop series is based on the simple idea that the ability of charities and grassroots social change organisations to clearly articulate their “why”\, their “what” and their “so what” is the bedrock for effective impact and long-term survival. In other words\, in a time of deep financial challenge with the pressure on funds and fundraising at an all-time high\, an organisation that can clearly articulate their “why”\, their “what”\, and their “so what” will have a greater chance of lasting and even flourishing in this climate. \n\n\n\nOver a series of three 1-hour online sessions aimed at Scotland-based organisations\, Take Note’s Lead Consultant\, Marianna Hay MBE\, will introduce attendees to the Power of Purpose approach. With over 15 years’ experience designing\, building and delivering high impact\, award winning arts and social change organisations and initiatives\, Marianna has developed the Power of Purpose series on behalf of the Binks Hub to share and scale the strategies she has learnt and deployed along the way. \n\n\n\nThese sessions are for: \n\n\n\n\nScotland-based small-medium charities and grassroots social change organisations\n\n\n\nAll roles but ideal for trustees\, senior staff or workers with responsibility for strategy development\n\n\n\nWorkers and leaders steering organisations through significant financial challenge and uncertainty\n\n\n\n\nThe initial three-hour sessions will cover: \n\n\n\n\n“Telling Your Story”: An introduction to Impact Map Making and honing your message\n\n\n\n“Understanding Your Impact”: What difference does your work make and how do you know\n\n\n\n“Making it Happen”: Setting your strategy\, building the infrastructure and raising the money\n\n\n\n\nAttendance at all three sessions is strongly encouraged but the ability to attend all three is not required for registration. \n\n\n\nThere will be an opportunity for organisations that take part to apply for additional follow-on support from Take Note. DESCRIPTION:Speaking Towards One Another project is created and performed by Stephanie Lamprea (soprano)\, Yuki Neoh (performer)\, Megan McArthur (performer)\, Oana Stanciu (video art)\, Jen McGregor (dramaturg)\, Anne Kjær (video dramaturg and performer)\, and Tim Cooper & Alistair MacDonald (live electronics). \n\n\n\nSpeaking Towards One Another is a series of interdisciplinary staged performances for voice\, live electronics\, video\, wearable performance technology\, and British Sign Language. The first full performance will be premiered in Inspace in May 2025 as part of a video and sound installation. \n\n\n\nThis unique opening performance will use live electronics to transform and digitise the singing and speaking voice\, and wearable digital technologies to transform British Sign Language into live sounds and visuals. The concert will be accessible to hearing and D/deaf audience members via visual interpretations of the music\, a live BSL translator\, and printed programmes with all texts spoken\, sung\, and signed in the performance. \n\n\n\nExhibition Details\n\n\n\nSpeaking Towards One Another installation is co-created by Oana Stanciu\, Anne Kjær\, Stephanie Lamprea\, and Yuki Neoh. It features multi-screen projections of ‘moving portraits’ and a music composition by Wende Bartley\, performed by Stephanie Lamprea. By exploring images of public identity\, gender performativity\, female presence\, expression\, and testimony\, the moving images seek to subvert the male gaze and become figures of power in the public space. \n\n\n\nDates: 23-28 May 2025Times: 10:00-17:00 daily  | Free/Drop-inLocation: Inspace\, 1 Crichton St\, Newington\, Edinburgh EH8 9AB \n\n\n\nAbout the Project\n\n\n\nThis project will feature two newly commissioned musical works by composers Laura Bowler and Amble Skuse\, and recent works by composers Rebecca Saunders\, Stuart Macrae\, and Tom W. In March 2007 she was elected to the fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and in 2018\, to the membership of the Academia Europaea. She is the recipient of the Suffrage Science Award for Computer Science and the RSE Lord Kelvin Medal. She was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 2022. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Marcus Weldon\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarcus Weldon is the Emeritus President of Bell Labs\, the world-renowned innovation powerhouse that defined the current digital age.  He has currently helping a wide variety of companies with their AI strategies\, as well as acting as the Contributing Editor for AI for Newsweek magazine with the AI Impact series of interviews with the leading prognosticators\, pioneers and practitioners of AI across the globe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Peter Flach\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter Flach has been involved in AI research for four decades. He joined the Department (now School) of Computer Science at the University of Bristol in 1997 and has been Professor of Artificial Intelligence since 2003. An internationally leading scholar in the evaluation and improvement of machine learning models\, he has also published on mining highly structured data\, on knowledge-driven and explainable AI\, and on the methodology of data science. His books include Simply Logical: Intelligent Reasoning by Example (John Wiley\, 1994; interactive online edition\, 2022) and Machine Learning: the Art and Science of Algorithms that Make Sense of Data (Cambridge University Press\, 2012). From 2010 until 2020\, Prof Flach was Editor-in-Chief of the Machine Learning journal. He is a founding board member\, previous President and current Vice-President of the European Association for Data Science. He is a Fellow of the European Lab for Learning and Intelligent Systems and of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence. He was the founding director of the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Interactive Artificial Intelligence\, and currently directs the UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in Practice-Oriented Artificial Intelligence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is co-hosted by Edinburgh Futures Institute and Bristol Digital Futures Institute.

SUMMARY:The Power of Purpose: workshop series
DESCRIPTION:Led by Take Note and produced in collaboration with The Binks Hub and The Centre for Research on Families and Relationships (CRFR)\, The Power of Purpose workshop series is based on the simple idea that the ability of charities and grassroots social change organisations to clearly articulate their “why”\, their “what” and their “so what” is the bedrock for effective impact and long-term survival. In other words\, in a time of deep financial challenge with the pressure on funds and fundraising at an all-time high\, an organisation that can clearly articulate their “why”\, their “what”\, and their “so what” will have a greater chance of lasting and even flourishing in this climate. \n\n\n\nOver a series of three 1-hour online sessions aimed at Scotland-based organisations\, Take Note’s Lead Consultant\, Marianna Hay MBE\, will introduce attendees to the Power of Purpose approach. With over 15 years’ experience designing\, building and delivering high impact\, award winning arts and social change organisations and initiatives\, Marianna has developed the Power of Purpose series on behalf of the Binks Hub to share and scale the strategies she has learnt and deployed along the way. \n\n\n\nThese sessions are for: \n\n\n\n\nScotland-based small-medium charities and grassroots social change organisations\n\n\n\nAll roles but ideal for trustees\, senior staff or workers with responsibility for strategy development\n\n\n\nWorkers and leaders steering organisations through significant financial challenge and uncertainty\n\n\n\n\nThe initial three-hour sessions will cover: \n\n\n\n\n“Telling Your Story”: An introduction to Impact Map Making and honing your message\n\n\n\n“Understanding Your Impact”: What difference does your work make and how do you know\n\n\n\n“Making it Happen”: Setting your strategy\, building the infrastructure and raising the money\n\n\n\n\nAttendance at all three sessions is strongly encouraged but the ability to attend all three is not required for registration. \n\n\n\nThere will be an opportunity for organisations that take part to apply for additional follow-on support from Take Note. SUMMARY:Who Owns the Future? Reimagining Education from AI to Abundant Imagination
DESCRIPTION:This public lecture\, hosted by the Centre for Research in Digital Education\, is part of the Stewart Alan Robertson Lecture Series funded by the Robertson Endowment. \n\n\n\nFrom automated decision systems in healthcare\, policing\, education and more\, technologies have the potential to deepen discrimination while appearing neutral and even benevolent when compared to harmful practices of a previous era. In this talk\, Ruha Benjamin takes us into the world of biased bots\, altruistic algorithms\, and their many entanglements\, and provides conceptual tools to decode tech predictions with historical and sociological insight. \n\n\n\nWhen it comes to AI\, Ruha shifts our focus from the dystopian and utopian narratives we are sold\, to a sober reckoning with the way these tools are already a part of our lives. You are welcome to work on any kind of writing project you have.
