Education leaders bring fresh perspectives on impact of crises

In this article

Education leaders will discuss the Future of Education on the themes of crisis, utopia and AI in the Edinburgh Futures Conversations Series, held over three sessions in October and November and 2024.

Education advocate Sarah Brown and Kainat Riaz, a former classmate of Nobel Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai, will discuss the impact of global crises on education at an event later this month.

Taking part in the University of Edinburgh discussion, they will be joined by a panel of global leaders who will discuss the future of education in extreme circumstances.

They will be joined by the voices of students who have lived and worked through crisis situations, and by the poet Marjorie Lotfi who will be performing a piece commissioned for the event.

The Future of Education

Taking place on 21 October, The Future of Education: Crisis event is the first in a series being held in the University’s Edinburgh Futures Institute – the recently renovated former Royal Infirmary building.

Each of the three events, hosted during October and November, will feature thought-leaders, scholars and creatives who have firsthand experience and offer unique insight on a range of issues facing education.

Kicking off the Edinburgh Futures Conversations season, the talks cement the University of Edinburgh’s reputation as a hub for global dialogue and intellectual innovation.

Utopia and AI

Future conversations will focus on the themes of utopia and artificial intelligence, with new poetry commissioned for each from leading poets Joelle Taylor and JL Williams.

The Utopia event will bring together a group of high-profile academics, activists and creatives to discuss how education might support us to work toward more just and sustainable futures.

In November, the event focuses on artificial intelligence and how it might support education for public good.

The events are free to attend at the Edinburgh Futures Institute and will also be live streamed.

The Futures Conversations events are part of Edinburgh Futures Institute’s Autumn 2024 programme, Learning Curves, which opened on 7 October with events featuring Jeanette Winterson and the humanoid robot Ameca, Bernardine Evaristo and award-winning dance network Studio Wayne McGregor.

Professor Sir Peter Mathieson, Principal of University of Edinburgh said:

“We are honoured to welcome an array of distinguished speakers from across the globe for the sixth edition of the Edinburgh Futures Conversations. By exploring diverse perspectives on the future of education, we seek to inspire new paths and create solutions for a more equitable and sustainable global future. This series is not only a platform for intellectual exchange but a vital step toward reimagining education in response to the unprecedented challenges we face.”
