Joe Noteboom is Senior Learning Technology and Design Advisor within the Education Team at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, and works with Course Organisers and Programme Directors to support their use of digital technologies for teaching and learning. He facilitates that innovative and exploratory use of technology for equitable access to learning through the Futures Institute’s unique Fusion teaching approach. The Learning Technology and Design team apply a research-informed approach, in collaboration with academic colleagues, to create high quality learning experiences for all students, wherever and however they are accessing their programmes, and promote the ethical and inclusive use of learning technologies at Edinburgh Futures Institute.
Joe has more than 10 years’ experience as a teacher, researcher and administrator in universities in a number of countries, and has most recently completed (pending examination) a PhD in Sociology as part of Edinburgh Futures Institute’s Centre for Technomoral Futures and Centre for Research in Digital Education, which investigated the social and ethical implications of data-driven technologies and practices in UK higher education. During his doctoral studies, Joe worked as a Teaching Assistant and supported the development of the Futures Institute’s Fusion teaching approach, and was a member of the University’s AI and Data Ethics Advisory Board. He is particularly interested in how the proliferation of data-driven systems and platforms affects students’ experiences of university and informs their perspectives on digital technology and data more broadly, and in ethical and participatory approaches to governing data-driven technologies.
