Anja

My name is Anya Hendrikse Liu, and I study Narrative Futures. It was because there is not really another program anywhere in the world, at least that I know of, that combines the sort of storytelling, narrative studies side of things with a more technological focus on, like data science and AI. And that interdisciplinary focus was really something that I was looking for.

I didn’t actually plan on coming back for a master’s at all. And when one of my friends told me about this program was like, hey, this is right up your alley. I kind of was like, well, I guess I’m going to Edinburgh now [laughs] I think these technologies like, I, you know, big data in general and all of the kind of ethical and social questions around them, political questions, like all of the ways that they’re intersecting with the world that we live in, like these are becoming more and more prominent.

And I think it’s really, really important to have people who are looking at it from all perspectives, not just people coming from the technological side and saying, hey, we’re going to build this really cool thing, but rather people who are also coming from policy or from the social sciences or from, you know, looking at it from a more ethics or equity perspective, and really thinking about how it’s going to impact the world and real people.

I think, I think the most exciting thing would be the people, I think I met such an incredible community here. People are really just genuinely interested and interesting. I don’t think there’s been another time in my life when I’ve met this kind of community who all came together, around what seems to be such a niche topic.

But really, they’re coming from all different backgrounds and really diverse perspectives and.

I, go into some sort of data heavy operations type role in an org, ideally doing responsible AI or AI ethics, that sort of thing, and safety. I think for me, this would be a great way to meld my kind of skills in data science, AI systems, and that sort of thing with trying to make as big an impact as I can, because in my opinion, safe AI, responsible AI is one of the most important things that we can be working on right now and for the next few years.

I would say I’m in. Be prepared to make the most out of the year that you have here, because if you’re going to be a full time student, a year is really such a short time. And you’re going to be surrounded by so many opportunities and so many people and having some sort of plan when you come in, even if it ends up changing, like having something to guide you and to be, you know, pushing you towards certain opportunities or towards making certain connections, it’s just going to be really valuable to making sure you make the most out of your time.

Benedicta

Hello, my name is Benedicta,

I am currently studying Data Inequality and Society at the University of Edinburgh, at the Edinburgh Futures Institute.

I am originally from Ghana, and the reason why I came here to have my postgraduate studies is because of the, beautiful landscape at Edinburgh and also the fact that my university is also part of the Russell Group, which also boasts of, good, credentials of research.

So I wanted to gain these experiences as part of my journey towards my career.

Why is Data, Inequality and Society important in today’s world?

So I would say that given the upsurge in A.I. that’s ‘artificial intelligence’ – and also how data is really shaping how we make decisions in our world, I would say my course is really relevant, in order for us to really think around how data can also reinforce inequality in society.

And so, this course is quite unique because it gives you a space to really interact with other course students from other groups to gain, interdisciplinary skills in how to challenge data and how to also, really address societal issues in in the world today.

What is the most exciting thing about studying at Edinburgh Futures Institute?

I would say that, one the the building is quite unique. the experience at EFI is quite unique because it challenges you to really engage with other course students in shaping the future that we want to see in our world. Also, the experience the students experience and, the welcoming experience that I got whilst coming into, Edinburgh was also quite unique because during my first week, we were given a period where we could select our courses.

I spoke to my student advisor, which was quite, helpful in guiding me in the type of courses I want to pursue. And I believe those experiences quite, shaped how, my overall experience throughout my postgraduate degree has been and is quite, really helpful.

What kind of career opportunities will you look at after studying here?

Yeah, I would say so, I remember in one of my course challenge, I was able to consult with undergrad students in computer science in why they should implement ethics in their system design, which was robotics. And so I believe those experiences have also giving me, an idea of what I want to do beyond my postgraduate degree, which is to provide organisations the reason why they should implement or translate ethics in their organisation

The experience here is really, wonderful. And I welcome you all to EFI.

Nat

My name is Nat Cartier, I’m originally from Switzerland and I’ve been living in Edinburgh for four years. I did my bachelor’s here and went directly into my master’s doing Creative Industries.

Creative Industries for me was the perfect choice. I know that I want to be based my whole life inside of the creative industries. I love creation and I feel right where I belong. Here at EFI.

Why did you choose Edinburgh for your studies?

I chose Edinburgh because the first time I came and visited the city. Something about the city spoke to me and it just gave me this special spark of I need to be here, I need to come in Edinburgh, I need to experience more of Edinburgh. And that led me to choose to study at Edinburgh University, and I haven’t regretted the decision at all. I’ve had an amazing time studying at the uni here. It’s really been, you know, the time of my life here in Edinburgh. So I’m very grateful for the position that I’m in.

Why is Creative Industries important in today’s world?

My subjective answer is Creative Industries is the best course here at EFI. I think Creative Industries really shape everything around us, from the clothing that we’re wearing, the way we dress, the way we do our makeup, the way we walk about the city, the music we listen to, everything we interact with is in some way or another related to the creative industries. And it’s such an important part, especially with the digital world in the 21st century. For me, knowing more about the creative industries and becoming a master of the creative industries was clear.

What is the most exciting thing about studying at Edinburgh Futures Institute?

The most exciting thing for me at the Edinburgh Futures Institute is the way it has shaped my thinking for my professional career and for going out into the professional world after my master’s. So I now feel fully equipped to transition into the professional world inside of the creative industries.

What kind of career opportunities will you look at after studying here?

What I know is that I want to be based inside of the creative industries, and this degree has opened up all these opportunities where I feel that I have the relevant skills to apply to an incredibly large spectrum of jobs. And having that wide spectrum of choice is such a luxury to have. And super important, if you’re trying to build your own future and sculpt your life the way that you want to sculpt it.

What is it like to study in the new Edinburgh Futures Institute building?

The thing I like most about the EFI building is coming into the building and feeling inspired to work. It’s a beautiful piece of architecture, blending the old and the new. It used to be a hospital, the old infirmary building and that is now transitioned into the Edinburgh Futures Institute. It’s a really beautiful environment to get productive in, to meet with people, socialise, create and make change for the future.

Shawn

Hi, my name is Shawn and I am from China. I am studying the Data and Artificial Intelligence Ethics program. And the reason I chose this program is because I wanted to work in the tech industry, and I really think this program is relevant in today’s economy.

Why did you choose Edinburgh for your studies?

Um, well, first of all, the University of Edinburgh is a prestigious university, so I think that’s going to help me with my employability. And secondly, I think the city of Edinburgh is just really lovely. You know, you get this- it’s very compact. You get everything you need in a walkable distance. So yeah, that’s the two reasons.

Why is Data and Artificial Intelligence important in today’s world?

Well, because it is an increasingly relevant topic that people are talking about. And my background’s in China. Right now, it’s not yet that popular of a discussion, but I think it’s going to be a trend in the future. So I’m just preparing myself for, the next step.

What is the most exciting thing about studying at Edinburgh Futures Institute?

I really like the building, first of all, I think it’s easily one of the university’s most beautiful buildings around here, and it’s really accessible, the space is really big. It’s got a lot of different- a lot of big windows. I really like that. It really makes, your study easier.

What kind of career opportunities will you look at after studying here?

After my graduation, I would like to work in the tech and AI industry as a product manager to develop relevant products that will help- the audience. So I think my degree is really relevant in that, context.

What is it like studying alongside online students?

Working with them, was a delight. And the only thing, I guess the only hard thing to is to schedule the time, because there are people scattered across different time zones. So that was, I guess one of the biggest challenges. But then overall, I think it’s a fairly easy and enjoyable process.

What advice would you give to new students?

Yeah, I think one piece of advice I would give is that the, intensive study is kind of different from traditional modes of study. You get- you need a lot more, I guess, self-motivation to plan and design your own study and schedules. So that’s, I guess, one thing to look out for is that you need to be, a lot more motivated than if you are in, let’s say, a traditionally scheduled study program.

A day in the life of an efi student

“Choosing to study at Edinburgh Futures Institute is one of the best decisions I have made in my life. The interdisciplinary approach at the institute elevates the experience to another level. Being surrounded by a diverse student community comprised of doctors, journalists, teachers, and engineers, among others, has enriched my journey beyond measure. The Institute has also fostered invaluable connections that I will cherish for years to come. The sense of belonging is apparent, making it feel like more than just an educational institution—it feels like home.

Jay Bharat Choudhari, Student, MSc Data, Inequality and Society

JAY

Hello everyone. My name is Jay Bharat and I’m from India, currently I’m pursuing a Master’s degree in Data Inequality and Society at the University of Edinburgh, at Edinburgh Futures Institute.

Why did you choose Edinburgh for your studies?

I chose Edinburgh for my studies because of the university’s global reputation, the interdisciplinary approach of my school and of course, the impressive research output of the university.

Why is Data, Inequality and Society important in today’s world?

In today’s world, where inequalities are on the rise and the disputes between countries are increasing, having educated advocates who can guide us towards a better future is in a crucial need. And that’s what my course talks about.

What is the most exciting thing about studying at Edinburgh Futures Institute?

So the most exciting aspect of studying at the beautiful Edinburgh Futures Institute, is its interdisciplinary approach to education. It fosters a vibrant network of students towards a common goal in diverse ways from different perspectives, constantly promoting personal growth and learning. I just constantly feel that I’m learning something new.

What is it like to study in the new Edinburgh Futures Institute building??

Studying in the new building offers a perfect blend of historic charm and, spatial amenities. The fusion mode of learning, which caters to both, in-person and online learning students, which is particularly impressive. I mean, you have a person joining from Pakistan, you have a person who’s joining from China. And, it just makes me feel that I’m learning a lot from different perspectives. And, it just helps me a lot.

Most courses are taught via two-day intensives – what has that been like?

The two day intensive courses, to be very honest, align perfectly with my study style, allowing me to immerse myself fully in each of the subjects, and allocate equal time to all the aspects of my learning.

What advice would you give to new students?

To new EFI students, I would advise building connections. sharing your story, listening to others. I believe, and I strongly believe that everyone has a unique perspective to offer, and being a good listener can enrich your educational experience significantly.

All the very best to all the prospective students of EFI.
