The University of Edinburgh has partnered with The Leith Collective/We Relove to host collection points for ‘The Winter Coat Exchange,’ an initiative providing warm clothing to those facing financial difficulty.
As temperatures drop and the cost of living continues to impact families across Scotland, the University is opening its doors to support a vital city-wide campaign. Staff, students, and members of the public are invited to donate good quality winter coats and waterproof jackets, which will be redistributed free of charge to individuals in need.
The initiative, led by The Leith Collective/We Relove, aims to address two pressing issues: the cost of living crisis and the climate emergency. By keeping quality clothes in use for longer, the project promotes a circular economy while ensuring dignity and warmth for vulnerable members of the Edinburgh community.

Why it matters
Around one in five people in Scotland are currently living in poverty. For many, purchasing a warm winter coat is a financial impossibility. The Winter Coat Exchange operates on a “no questions asked” basis, offering relief to those who might otherwise go without essential clothing this winter.
In addition to the social impact, the campaign supports the University’s commitment to sustainability. Rehoming textiles reduces waste sent to landfill and lowers the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing new clothing.
