Edinburgh Futures Institute is seeking applications for our Visiting Fellowship Programme 2025/2026, following the success of our inaugural programme last year.
We are seeking applications that align with our vision to challenge, create, and make change happen. Tackle complex issues by bringing people and disciplines together to spark the unexpected and make better futures possible.
The Visiting Fellowship programme offers researchers who have an open-ended position within an academic institution the chance to work within the Futures Institute for 3-6 months. We are offering a bursary of £1,500.00 per month, as well as reimbursement of travel and visa costs, where required. Successful applicants will be expected to make a contribution to our research community, through delivering guest lectures or seminars, collaborating on grant proposals, or contributing to teaching.
The applicant’s research should contribute to collaborative, data-driven, and interdisciplinary research innovation across the University of Edinburgh, within one of our six key research areas:
- Creative Industries & Digital Humanities
- Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence
- Financial Services & Fintech
- Future Infrastructure
- Public Sector: prevention, data civics, participatory democracy, governance
- Tourism & Festivals
Applications are encouraged from researchers in these fields, and decisions will be made based on experience and research commensurate to career stage. We will also give particular consideration to those from Low or Middle-Income Countries, or other applicants who represent minorities not currently well-represented at the Futures Institutes.
Professor Enda Delaney, Director of Research at Edinburgh Futures Institute, said:
‘The Visiting Fellowship scheme offers the opportunity for talented and innovative researchers from across the world to spend time working in the unique environment of the Edinburgh Futures Institute. It is a vital element of our challenge-led and interdisciplinary ecosystem’
Professor Ivan Diaz-Rayney joined the first cohort of Visiting Fellows at the Futures Institute, collaborating with University of Edinburgh colleagues on a range of climate finance topics. In particular, he worked on an interdisciplinary project that drew from data science, GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping, and credit risk and banking expertise that explores the implications of river flooding on financial stability in the UK.
Professor Diaz-Rayney said:
“This Fellowship represents a return to my alma mater, where I spent four very happy years, that were deeply enriching personally and intellectually.”
Visiting fellows will be able to take part in our seminars and events programmes, access our training courses, and interact with other academics affiliated with the Futures Institute, our partners from the business and third sector, and our students. The scheme will therefore help the fellows to develop their research in conversation with colleagues in Edinburgh but will also allow Edinburgh Futures Institute and the wider University to foster new international collaborative links.
The deadline for applications is 23 January 2025. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of February 2024.
