The charitable purposes of The Scottish Policy and Research Exchange (SPRE) is: the advancement of science and research through encouraging its greater use in public policymaking; the advancement of education by improving policy outcomes and community wellbeing more generally as a result of linking policy processes more closely to research evidence; the advancement of citizenship; and the encouragement of equality and diversity by supporting new voices from research to engage with policy.

SPRE has a long-term commitment to supporting researchers of all disciplines and career stages to improve their policy-engagement practice. This is part of their broader purpose of supporting stronger, more holistic and more diverse relationships between Scottish research and policy communities, in order to improve outcomes for people in Scotland. They deliver this purpose through an integrated approach, involving four priority areas of work: 1) Convening diverse expertise; 2) Facilitating co-learning; 3) Applying research in practice; and 4) Supporting diverse and equitable forms of engagement in research and policy.
