This exhibition is a woven tribute to our shared history, showcasing bespoke designs for a new tartan to honour our medical school community’s enduring spirit. This is an opportunity to thread together stories of care, strength and innovation and to sow the seeds of a legacy for future generations.
In 1726, the first formal Faculty of Medicine was established. In 2026 Edinburgh Medical School is exploring its history in shaping modern medicine, highlighting its diverse community and setting the stage for future innovations in medical education and healthcare.
Following a student competition open to all art and design students within Edinburgh College of Art, a commemorative tartan has been chosen to represent 300 years of Edinburgh Medical School - past, present and future. Students were invited to weave the story of Edinburgh Medical School into a contemporary design that acknowledges our past whilst demonstrating our enduring commitment to a compassionate, collaborative and inclusive future.
Taking inspiration from a medical graph, the winning design follows a grid-like structure. The colours chosen represent established University of Edinburgh colours including dark blue and red. Triple red lines symbolise the influence of the University of Padua, Italy, in the establishment of Edinburgh Medical School and 300 years of scientific research and advancement at Edinburgh. Red for blood and liver, and yellow for pus reflect the traditional Edinburgh Medical School colours. Purple lines symbolise the acceptance of women into medical education and the University of Edinburgh. Inclusivity is central to this design.
