Edinburgh Futures Institute is proud to open the call for applications to our inaugural Visiting Fellowship programme starting in the 2024/25 academic year. The programme is designed to allow exceptional researchers to work on a project of their choice in collaboration with academics affiliated with the Futures Institute, who will act as “sponsor.”

We are seeking applications that align with our vision to challenge, create, and make change happen. Tackle complex issues by bringing people and disciplines together to spark the unexpected and make better futures possible.

The Visiting Fellowship programme offers researchers a chance to work within the Futures Institute for 3-6 months. We are offering a bursary of £1,500.00 per month, as well as reimbursement of travel and visa costs, where required. Successful applicants will be expected to make a contribution to the local research community, through delivering guest lectures or seminars, helping to write grant proposals, or contributing to teaching.

The applicant’s research should contribute to collaborative, data-driven, and interdisciplinary research innovation across the University of Edinburgh, within one of our six key research areas:

  • Creative industries and digital humanities
  • Financial services and fintech
  • Festivals and tourism
  • Public sector: prevention, data civics, participatory democracy, governance
  • Future infrastructure, with a focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Ethics of data and artificial intelligence

Applications are encouraged from researchers in these fields, and decisions will be made based on experience and research commensurate to career stage. We will also give particular consideration to those from Low or Middle-Income Countries, or other applicants who represent minorities not currently well-represented at the Futures Institute.

Interim Director or Research, Theodor Cojoianu said:

“We are delighted to launch the Edinburgh Futures Institute Visiting Fellowship, which will enable researchers around the world to immerse themselves in and contribute to innovative and impactful futures research and engagement at the University of Edinburgh.”

The deadline for applications is 29 January 2024. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of February 2024.
