Slate from the Spirit Case sculpture displaying the words 'nightingale ward'

A Day in a Nightingale Ward

Busy ward

Wakened early

Tea and bread and butter

Washing, bed-making

Breakfast – always porridge, extra boiled egg

Doctors visiting, so many all day long

Lunch at last, three courses served by Sister

A little nap after lunch, asked for painkillers

Student friends visiting, in sitting room

Chatting with other patients, maybe a joke or two

Boyfriend visiting out of visiting hours

Relatives visiting in the evening and flowers, fruit

Light supper – maybe roll sent by my mother

Sleep at last, everyone quiet, peace
